Honeynets

Honeypot technology uses deception to learn from and about an attacker and helps to improve system security generally. When utilised with a ‘Sandbox’ implementation, it has a promising role to discover and provide a level of potential resistance to Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) and other less challenging attacks. The concept of honeypots was initially identified in the early 1990’s with their potential applications realised and developed in the early 2000’s. Although the technology is well known amongst academics and security professionals Honeypots have not been deployed in significant numbers within organisations as part of an overall security strategy. Instead, industry surveys shows that there is a reliance on Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDPS) and firewalls [1]. In this article, Aaron Momi investigates how Honeypot technology is used to learn from, and about, an attacker, and to improve system security generally.
