DNA and Bioinformatics

In this article Brian Young describes transformative changes that are coming to forensic DNA analysis as a result of the synergistic combination of a new DNA sequencing technology called massively parallel sequencing (MPS) and new bioinformatics algorithms capable of processing the prodigious and complex data produced by MPS. These technologies are revolutionizing how DNA is exploited for crime fighting, by uncovering the information buried within DNA sequences; information that can be used by law enforcement and intelligence to help find suspects or link suspects to crime scenes. Brian describes the benefits and limitations of the new technologies; as well as some of the data management, societal and policy issues that will surely accompany these new advances.
