Information Leakage in the Internet of Things

Many of the IoT devices that are readily available to extend human perception, experience, and work functionality are designed for throughput delivery of specific outcomes.

For example, a simple GPS system that is used for navigation on a phone or in a car will provide approximate advice to guide a person from one location to another. However, the residual information left after a successful journey may never be reconsidered unless summaries are requested or the path replayed for improvement. The residual information is useful to forensic investigators but in isolation remains in a digital garbage can and unwanted.

However, the IoT has changed all this by creating networks of interconnectivity and where information previously was left in digital garbage cans, it becomes useful, saleable, and transferable. The interconnectivity of the IoT means that information is migrated from locations of high cost to locations of low cost. In real terms this means the data generated at the peripheral sensors of the network is rapidly moved through reprocesses and cloud storage facilities in order to extract the highest value.
