As technology is incorporated into an ever widening range of applications that affect our everyday lives, we are increasingly being asked to trust that it will function correctly and that information that we provide, or that is collected about us, will be properly protected. we increasingly hear of the ‘internet of things’, which consists of everyday objects that have uniquely identifiable embedded processors that are connected to the internet. typically we currently think of the types of objects that will be connected as the fridge, the coffee maker or the washing machine, but in reality there are a huge number of applications already in use. in the future, the interconnection of these embedded devices is expected to enable automation in nearly all fields, including applications such as smart grids.
