DDOS Attacks on Mobile Devices

Denial of service attacks (DoS), distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS) and reflector attacks (DRDoS) are well known and documented. More recently however we have seen that these attacks have been directed at mobile communication devices. The DDoS technique is very hard to detect and identify because it may be launched from hundreds or thousands of compromised nodes over the Internet. During an attack, it is difficult to distinguish between legitimate network traffic and DDoS attack traffic.

Detection, prevention and trace back are the three main areas of DDoS that researchers are focusing on and to complicate matter DDoS has developed into a new type of DoS known as Low-rate DDoS. Using this type of DDoS attack, the attackers may now launch an attack using mobile SMART devices such as SMART phones. This type of attack was first reported by Murdock (2015) and involved 650,000 SMART phones and created 4.5 billion hits on the target. In the body of knowledge we investigated it is evident that there have been studies carried out in an attempt to enhance the detection, mitigation and trace back mechanisms. What is also evident is that this type of attack is becoming a significant and continuous threat.
