This is the second part of a multi-part article investigating Fake News.
Digital media has paved the way for anyone to doctor images and for videos to misrepresent truth. The lines between fact, entertainment, advertising, fabrication and fiction are becoming increasingly blurred as what is termed ‘fake news’ increases in modern day society. The old adage, “seeing is believing”, no longer holds true in modern society. Fake news, misinformation and disinformation are all used interchangeably, however, there are marked differences between them which we will investigate briefly. Apart from the obvious impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we also saw a proliferation of fake news/misinformation and its consequences; a misinformed and polarised public.
