Everyone walks to the beat of their own drum, but for business purposes networks should have only one. In this article, we examine the needs, issues and technologies associated with keeping accurate network time. We examine the needs, issues and technologies associated with keeping accurate network time. Critical not only for business needs but for everyone relying on technology, we’ll also look at a novel approach developed by the author to gauge the network time accuracy of local and remote networks using email.

The need for accurate timekeeping is largely self-answering, humans track everything time-related, from the length of eclipses and occultations to the lifespan of particle-accelerated collisions, from sundials to mechanical clocks to the most expensive watches, no two timekeeping devices record the same time. But without agreement on time, how can there be hope of arbitrating when an event occurred?
